Summary:
At this time of year it can be quite hard to find insects, however winter is actually the peak time of activity for some species. Adrian Knowles BSc (Hons) FRES MCIEEM, Senior Ecologist for Essex Ecology Services explores insect species you may spot in Essex this January, and how you can help their winter survival.

Buff-tailed Bumblebee
This bumblebee species is increasingly maintaining nests throughout winter, so can sometimes be seen on sunnier days. They especially use Mahonia flowers since this is a winter flowering shrub, however, they will also utilise Red Dead-nettle and White Dead-nettle which flower very early in the season. Allowing patches of these “weeds” to flourish can be an invaluable nectar resource.
