Are you bonkers about butterflies? Can you tell a Large White from a Small White?

We are looking for volunteers to carry out butterfly transects in the Uttlesford region of Essex at our West Wood, Shadwell Wood and Brookes reserves between April and September.

The transects are generally carried out weekly, but are weather dependent. You are not expected to attend each session. The same route is walked each week. To begin with the Area Reserves Officer would walk you with but ideally you would then move on to carrying out the transects on your own .

You should be able to walk on uneven ground and be familiar with butterfly species, but you don’t need to be an expert.

If you would like to get involved with monitoring the butterfly species in this beautiful region then contact the volunteering team by email volunteering@essexwt.org.uk or phone 01621 862940

As a member of the birdseed team, who operate from Abbotts Hall Farm, Great Wigborough, near Colchester, you will undertake a varied role from packing to delivering our products, so a flexible approach is required. The team mix, pack and deliver Essex Wildlife Trust’s branded bird seed, with the profit from this operation going directly to the Trust.

The work involves mixing bird seed, using the machinery provided, packing and sealing it into labelled bags of different sizes ready for delivery to the Trust’s 11 Visitor Centres around the county.

This work is quite physical involving lifting and carrying bags of bird seed around the farm, in and out of a van, and into the Centres themselves. A small amount of paperwork is also involved although the majority of this is carried out by the operative managing the team.

In order to carry out deliveries you would need to hold a full valid driving licence and be aged over 25 (due to insurance restrictions). The deliveries are currently undertaken on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays along fixed routes of between 70 and 110 miles.

Ideally you would be able to commit to helping for one day a week (day dependent on work schedule) but some flexibility is always welcome.
